DEVELOPMENT OF TORSIONAL COMBUSTION TECHNIQUE
During the time of wars, because of the lack of petrol to produce energy, South America countries tried to burn biomass fuels to fulfil their energy needs. This obligation because of the lack of petrol, brought on producing energy by burning forestal and agricultural residues. In the countries where agriculture is source of income like Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil, Chile, there were a lot of biomass combustion technique developed. Torsional Combustion Technique has appeared as a result of this developments.

“DESIGN OF TORSIONAL COMBUSTION CHAMBER”
For the best results, fluid flow analysis, thermal analysis and stress analysis are being achieved in computers and the result is perfect combustion of biomass.

ADVANTAGES OF TORSIONAL COMBUSTION TECHNIQUE

– Investment costs are comperable with grate system boilers but, lower than fluidized bed systems.
– Torsional Chamber can be designed and applied starting from 750 kW, up to 30.000 kW capacities.
– Above 30.000 kW capacities, more than one Torsional Chamber can be applied in one boiler system.
– If the existing boiler design is available, Torsional Chamber can be applied to existing systems.
– Torsional Chamber can be applied to both water tube boilers and smoke tube boilers
– Biomass can be burnt with a very low excess air up to % 15-20 (nearly equal to natural gas burner)
– CO emissions are very low.
– Because of there is no sulphur in the fuel, there is no SOx emissions in flue gas.
– Simple fine dust filters can be used to reduce dust emissions
– Because of the low combustion temperature, NOx emissions are very low.
– There is always a steady flame inside the Torsional Chamber
– System can meet perfectly the fluctuation of steam consumptions.
– Torsional Chamber can be run between the capacities of % 20 – 100
– In some applications, because of the Torsional Chamber and the boiler system can be fixed to directly concrete basement, civil work costs are very low.
– System can be run automatically.
– System can be run 10.000 hours (more than one year) without any stop after start up.
– There are no mechanical parts inside the Torsional Chamber and boiler.
– Mechanical parts that are possible to be broken down are easy to supply equipments like fan, rotary valve, screw…
– There is no serious failure report on the running systems until today.
– Maintenance costs are very low
– Inner electricity consumptions and operation costs are very low.

WHY TORSIONAL COMBUSTION SYSTEM

From the point of consideration of chemical properties of ash, it can be seen that there are too much alcali oxides in it. This situation causes ash to have a low melting temperature. Although the temperature in the centre of Torsional Chamber reaches up to 1100°C, temperatures at the membrane wall (periphery of the cylindirical chamber) are too low because of the water circulation and ash, can not leave the outer wall because of the affect of centrifugal force. Thus, sufficient combustion media comes into being for biomass fuels which have too low ash melting temperature and biomass fuels, which have ash melting temperature below 900°C, can be burnt in this system.

TORSIONAL COMBUSTION SYSTEM

Torsional Combustion Chamber is manufactured cylindirical and horizontal and there is a narrow throat inward the chamber at the connection point of the boiler. Along the cylindirical combustion chamber, combustion air is fed to the chamber as tangential and due to the movement of air, fuel starts to tangential movement inside the chamber. While the radial speed increasing towards the centre of combustion chamber, contrarily, radial moving mass flow increasing towards the internal wall. Between this two layer, there is a turbuent layer which has equal speed and mass flow. Perfect combustion occurs in this turbulent area.

There are two headers at the bottom and top side of combustion chamber and it is possible to design with natural or forced water circulation. Torsional Chamber is cooled down by means of fluid flow at the membrane wall thus, temperatures inside the chamber can be fixed at desired level. Combustion chamber is manufactured as completely gas-proof membrane wall. Torsional movement is achieved with the nozzles which are located at the plates between water tubes.
